Carriage House Farm

Carriage House Farm (North Bend, OH)

Carriage House Farm is nestled in the Miami River Valley outside the village of North Bend, Ohio.  The Stewart Family Farm started in 1852 and has been cultivating for five generations.  As the family has grown, so has the farm.  What was once a small 90 acre homestead, today includes more than 300 acres of fertile, mostly river bottom land and woods.  Carriage House Farm represents a little over 1% of all of Hamilton County’s land used solely for agriculture.

Richard Marion Stewart,  great-grandson of Job and Missouri Hayes, the 19th century founders of the farm, has continued farming and expanding over the past 50 years. Richard Michael Stewart, son of Richard Sr., is continuing the family tradition on the land, while leading the farm into the next generation.  The Stewart family believes that America’s farm heritage must be preserved and they are doing their part to help preserve farm land along the Miami River.

The Stewart’s love for Beekeeping began in 2006 when they came across one of their great grandfather’s antique hives.  He had kept bees close to 100 years ago as a hobby and a way of helping to pollinate the family’s apple orchard.  Richard Jr. found an immediate passion for beekeeping as soon as he began and started his own business.  We are proud to offer Carriage House Farm’s one-of-a-kind honey to our members, as well as other goodies such as traditionally stone-ground cornmeal!

Clough Valley Maple Syrup

Clough Valley Maple Syrup (Anderson Township, Ohio)

Local All-Natural Pure Maple Syrup

Clough Valley Maple Syrup is located in Clough Creek Valley, a never-run-dry, glacial, spring-fed stream that is the largest watershed in Anderson Township and a tributary of the Little Miami River. The Motz Family has made this valley their home for five generations. Founded by cousins Edmund and Matt (late), Clough Valley Maple Syrup is now operated by Edmund and Matt’s four sons (Matt Jr., Bart, Lou, and Nick). The sugar bush is South of Clough Creek, on the North-facing slope and very densely populated with maple. Granny Motz used to have picnics here, when it was a dairy pasture with only a few beech trees.

Sap is collected in a totally enclosed pipeline system. It takes approximately 50 gallons of raw sap to make one gallon of maple syrup (67% Maple Sugar). By boiling away 49 gallons of water in an oil-fired evaporator, the continuous process leaves one gallon of maple syrup, which is drawn off the boiling evaporator, pressure-filtered, and bottled hot. Clough Valley Maple Syrup is bottled in glass so you can see the exceptional quality of the product.

Honeyrun Farm

Honeyrun Farm (Williamsport, Ohio)

Homemade Local Artisan Honey Products

Honeyrun Farm is a small family farm located near Williamsport, OH. They are committed to serving the local community with all-natural honey products and strive to produce environmentally mindful goods by taking a step back in time into small-scale farming.  Their honey is never pasteurized or high-pressure filtered.  It retains all its natural enzymes, trace vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, antibacterial properties, and the natural taste and aroma of the honey.  They are committed to producing the finest quality honey using no chemicals and only all-organic beekeeping methods.

Honeyrun extracts honey three times per year: Late Spring, Mid-Summer, and Fall.  This schedule allows for seasonal variations in the color and taste of the honey, bringing out distinct floral flavors and aromas that are representative of Central Ohio Wildflowers.  Each season brings a different type of honey as the nectar flow changes.  Spring honey is very light, mild, and delicate and is made primarily from Black Locust Trees.  Summer Honey is lightly sweet with a nice depth of flavor and makes for a great all-purpose honey.  It is made primarily from clover, Canadian thistle, and wild blackberries.  Fall honey is rich, robust, and intensely flavorful.  It is made from goldenrod and aster flowers and takes on a deep amber color.  Try Honeyrun Farm products year-round for an ever-evolving taste experience!

Luna Burger

Luna Burger (Columbus, OH)

All-Natural Vegan Veggie Burgers

Megan and Barbie Luna created Luna Burger with these values in mind: local ingredients, sustainability, community involvement, and hope for a just and equitable food system.  Born and raised in Ohio, they came to this vegan burger venture with the desire to do meaningful work.  It is their hope that a passion for good food and social justice will be a benefit to our Midwest Community.  Family farmers in Ohio and growers across the region provide the main ingredients for these vegan burgers.  From grains and beans to herbs and greens, they strive to bring great taste by supporting the local economy.  While ingredients are in season they use them fresh and then work hard to preserve them for use during the off-season months.

A good burger is rarely eaten alone!  That’s why creating relationships between farmers and consumers is important to the Lunas.  They feel that knowing where our food comes from is knowledge that we can’t afford to abandon and in knowing each other we create an accountability that rarely exists in the anonymous world of factory farms and food conglomerates.  They strive to create connections that link us to a particular place, a particular community, and the shared experience of eating a good burger with good friends.

Moondance Heavenly Desserts

Moondance Heavenly Desserts (Cincinnati, OH)

Tasty gluten free baked goods are challenging to find. Shelley Ritchie, owner of Cincinnati-based Moondance Heavenly Desserts, was forced to confront this unfortunate culinary conundrum after being diagnosed with a wheat and gluten intolerance. Instead of settling for the bland products she found in stores, she attacked the problem herself –  developing her own line of luxurious desserts! Shelley’s hard work paid off and because she refused to compromise, she accomplished the delicate task of subtracting the gluten without sacrificing decadent flavor and a moist texture. Now, Moondance Desserts is thriving with a delicious line of cheesecakes, brownies, and cookies. Even though they are gluten free, these treats are for everyone. You won’t be thinking about gluten when you taste a Moondance creation, you’ll simply be enjoying your dessert. And that’s the way it’s supposed to be!

Morning Sun Farm

Morning Sun Farm (West Alexandria, OH)

Morning Sun Farm is a family farm in Preble County,Ohio.  In 1982 farmer Dale and his wife Evelyn started becoming aware of the detrimental effects of farm chemicals on our health and our environment. They began using products that were less harsh to the soil including earthworms and soil microbes. (They learned that soil is alive and to treat it as such.) They also continued crop rotation & other proven practices that they had been using previously. Then, in 1992, they decided it was time, not just to cut back but also cut out, all harsh chemicals & antibiotics (they have never used hormones or GMO’s.) and become certified organic.  They believe in high quality and excellent service, and that is why their certified organic farm fresh eggs are truly one of a kind.

In 1991 they moved on to 20 acres out near Johnstown and expanded their operation. They raise a variety of seasonal produce, with heirloom variety tomatoes being their specialty. Mike and Laura can be found at the Worthington Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and the Westerville Farmers Market on Wednesday afternoons.

Oakvale Farmstead Cheese

Oakvale Farmstead Cheese (London, Ohio)

All-Natural Local Farmstead Artisan Cheese

Oakvale is a 5th generation dairy farm located in London, OH. The family has deep agricultural roots in Central Ohio dating back to 1853. Their handcrafted Farmstead Gouda is an authentic Dutch-style cheese.  For the past 7 years Oakvale has provided an award-winning premium cheese respected on a local and national platform.  Their cheese is made solely from the milk of grass-fed registered Holstein cows. This milk is grade-A premium quality and produces a smooth, buttery gouda with a creamy texture.

True Farmstead cheese is unique to the place it originates from and the people who make it. The flavor of the milk is created by the cows themselves, their diet, the land they live on, and the care they receive.  The quality of the milk is a direct reflection of herd health and management. Milk quality has a huge impact on the grade and flavor of cheese. It is up to the cheese maker to preserve that flavor and enhance it with care.  The advantage that farmstead cheese makers enjoy is that they control every aspect of the process from start to finish.  Each vat of cheese will be slightly different. Even the weather plays a part in the cheese flavor the day it is made.  Farmstead cheese makers must also pass various inspections and meet the same FDA and USDA requirements as do the large manufacturing plants.

Purely American

Purely American (Athens, OH)

Purely American is a simple name with deep meaning; it connects the Athens based company’s products to the country and its soil. Its products are Purely American because they lack artificial flavors and colors, and they are Purely American because they are inspired by the country’s many time-honored culinary traditions!

Company owner and founder, Ray Leard, began his Purely American journey the mid-1980’s when he started a small deli in Norfolk, Virginia. He began serving a New Orleans Style soup he called French Market ’18 bean’ soup to attract customers. The soup became so popular that he began packaging it as a mix to sell to tourists. Soon he was developing new bean and pasta mixes that celebrated American themes. In 1987 he sold the Deli to commit himself fulltime to Purely American Foods. The business grew substantially and in 2007 the Columbus native purchased land in Athens where he built a new 11,200 square foot warehouse. The new Athens facility allowed Purely American to acquire Organic Certification in 2008. Now it offers many organic bean and soup mixes, while supporting organic farmers.

Shagbark Seed and Mill

Shagbark Seed and Mill  (Athens, Ohio)

Shagbarks delicious products are produced in a medium-scale grain and bean mill in Athens, Ohio. The company was launched by the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative as the first step towards creating a sustainable regional staple foods system. Masterminds, Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger, are passionate about promoting small scale production and processing of staple crops like grains and beans. Their goal is to make it possible for local farmers to produce these items for local markets right here in the Midwest!

Staple crops are one of the great underexplored frontiers of the local food movement. Because of this, Shagbark is helping to fill a very important gap in our food system!

Snowville Creamery

Snowville Creamery (Pomeroy, OH)

Old-Fashioned Unhomogenized Artisan Milk

Their milk comes from Bill Dix and Stacy Hall’s genetically diverse herd which includes: Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein and Jersey cows. Since milk composition varies according to breed, their milk has a uniquely rich flavor. In addition, the cows are pasture-raised and grass-fed. When cows eat grass, they produce milk that is sweet and rich, but also particularly nutritious due to the essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Conjugated Linoleic Acids that are created by that diet.

Snowville Creamery believes milk is already perfect when it comes from the cow so they process it as little as necessary.
They do not homogenize so the cream naturally rises to the top. In addition, they pasteurize at the lowest legal temperature, resulting in milk that tastes sweet, clean and delicious.

“Milk the Way it Used to Be.”

Gunthorp Farms

Gunthorp Farms (Lagrange, IN)

All-Natural, Pasture-Raised Pork and Poultry

Greg Gunthorp was raised on a farm only a mile from where he now lives with his wife, Lei, and their three young children. Gunthorp’s hogs and chickens are free ranging. They have access to shelter and feed during bad weather, but spend most of their time foraging in pastures sown with wheat, clover, rye, and various grasses. The pigs even “harvest” their own corn. Gunthorp allows them to root through the stalks after the harvest on his father’s farm. The Gunthorps’ chickens are housed in up to 20 shelters that offer outside access. The flocks are rotated from shelter to shelter to spread manure and minimize the birds’ impact in any given area.

McCabe’s Granola

McCabe’s Granola (Covington, KY)

Marie began making granola for herself, friends and co-workers. McCabe’s Granola launched the brand in 2007. The first day the website was up and running, they experienced hundreds of dollars in sales. Thrilled, they jumped up and down and then had an “uh-oh!” moment when they realized they had no granola made, no boxes and no real plan for distribution. They persevered, however, and created many loyal customers who continue to crave McCabe’s Granola!

Wild Alaska Salmon Company

Wild Alaska Salmon Co. (Bristol Bay, Alaska)

Wild Alaskan Sockeye and Keta Salmon

Our friend Tony Wood is a fisherman and owner of Wild Alaska Salmon Co. With his commercial fishing boat and crew, Tony catches only wild Sockeye and Keta salmon in the icy waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska all summer long.  The catch is brought to shore twice daily and is immediately processed at his own facility.  The fish are portioned, immediately flash frozen and then vacuum sealed to maintain the natural flavor and beautiful texture of these wild salmon.  Salmon fishing in Bristol Bay is strictly regulated by the State of Alaska through a limited entry system. Through the efforts of the state and environmentalists, the salmon population is protected and ensured to be viable for years to come.  Wild Alaska Salmon’s fishing methods ensure that only salmon are caught while other species are completely safe.  While Sockeye and Keta salmon are a renewable resource, Tony and his crew recognize the importance of treating the species and its habitat with the utmost respect and reverence.
