Garden on the Go, brought to our community by Indiana University Health in partnership with Green B.E.A.N. Delivery, is a year-round produce truck providing fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables to neighborhoods in “food deserts” throughout Marian county, Indiana. For many Hoosier families, not eating healthy isn’t a choice, but rather a consequence of poor access to fresh, affordable options. Garden on the Go improves access by bringing healthy choices at low prices directly to the neighborhoods that need it most.

Communities in Need
According to USDA data, sixty eight percent of residents in low-income communities lack access to affordable, healthy foods. Only 23% of all Hoosiers eat the recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables and more than a third (36%) are overweight. Studies have shown that diets rich in fruits and vegetables offer a number of health benefits, and can help prevent obesity and diabetes. The Garden on the Go mobile produce truck is designed to improve access to produce and help address these public health challenges.
The positive response within the communities we serve has been overwhelming. Watch the video to see what a few Garden on the Go shoppers have to say about the program.
Visit the Truck
Want to see the truck for yourself? We’re operating Wednesday through Saturday at 12 locations, including several senior and public housing facilities. Although stops were chosen by looking at poverty density data and other indicators of food deserts, such as proximity to retail outlets, to determine the areas most in need, anyone is welcome to shop on the truck! We accept Cash, Credit, Debit and SNAP/EBT benefits. For times and locations, check the schedule.
Volunteer
We’re excited by Garden on the Go’s early success and the opportunity it provides Green B.E.A.n. Delivery and our customers to give back to the community. Now all we need are a few extra pairs of hands at each stop to help us run even more efficiently! Many of our shoppers are elderly or have health complications that require a little extra assistance with shopping or getting on and off the truck.
If you are interested in lending a helping hand as a Garden on the Go Volunteer at any one of our 12 stops, please email us at gardenonthego@greenbeandelivery.com with your availability.
